“When I first started, I had to learn that if you want to grow, you have to speak up for yourself,” Tammy shares. “No one will know what you’re capable of unless you show them.”

Speak with your manager about your career goals, request feedback, and actively pursue advancement opportunities instead of waiting for them to come to you. It’s easy for hard work to go unnoticed if you don’t speak up when you’ve achieved something significant, contributed to a project’s success, or developed a new skill… make sure people know.

Ask for opportunities. If you want to be on-site, in leadership, or in a new role, express it.

The best way to grow in your career is to ask for what you want. If you’re interested in gaining more field experience, let your supervisor know. If you want to move into leadership, seek out training or mentorship that will help you get there. The more you express your aspirations, the more likely you are to be considered for new challenges. No one can read your mind—make it clear what you’re working toward.
