Build Your Network – Tammy’s Story

Success in construction requires more than just skill—it requires confidence, advocacy, and a willingness to speak up. Tammy has built a career on ensuring projects run smoothly, managing key documents, coordinating with subcontractors, and keeping communication clear across teams. But beyond logistics, she knows how important it is to make your voice heard.

“When I first started, I had to learn that if you want to grow, you have to speak up for yourself,” Tammy shares. “No one will know what you’re capable of unless you show them.”

Speak with your manager about your career goals, request feedback, and actively pursue advancement opportunities instead of waiting for them to come to you. It’s easy for hard work to go unnoticed if you don’t speak up when you’ve achieved something significant, contributed to a project’s success, or developed a new skill… make sure people know.

Her advice for Women in Construction?

Ask for opportunities. If you want to be on-site, in leadership, or in a new role, express it.

The best way to grow in your career is to ask for what you want. If you’re interested in gaining more field experience, let your supervisor know. If you want to move into leadership, seek out training or mentorship that will help you get there. The more you express your aspirations, the more likely you are to be considered for new challenges. No one can read your mind—make it clear what you’re working toward.

Be confident in what you bring to the table. Your perspective is valuable.

As a woman in construction, you bring unique skills, experiences, and insights that add value to every project. Whether it’s problem-solving, communication, attention to detail, or project management, trust in your abilities and speak with confidence.   Your fresh perspective could lead to cost savings, better workflows, or increased safety on-site. Innovation in construction comes from people who speak up—don’t be afraid to be that person.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions – this is how we learn.

In construction, every project presents new challenges, materials, and techniques. No one knows everything, and the best way to grow is by asking questions. Whether you’re on-site, in a meeting, or reviewing plans, don’t hesitate to seek clarification if something doesn’t make sense. Asking thoughtful questions not only helps you gain knowledge but also shows initiative and engagement.

Remember: Experienced professionals respect those who want to learn. The more you ask, the more you understand, and the more confident you become in your role. Never let fear of looking inexperienced hold you back—every expert was once a beginner who asked a lot of questions!
